I’m usually cautious, but this scam was so sneaky that I nearly lost my crypto. I was searching for a mobile version of a popular wallet I already used on my desktop. I found what I thought was the official app on the Google Play Store—it had the right name, logo, and a lot of downloads.

After installing it, I imported my wallet using my recovery phrase, just like I normally would when syncing devices. Within minutes, I noticed a suspicious transaction notification. I opened my actual hardware wallet dashboard and saw that all my tokens were being drained.

I immediately disconnected internet access, but over $3,000 worth of assets had already been transferred to unknown addresses. I was furious and confused—how could this app be on Google Play?

Turns out, scammers had created a copycat app using the exact same name and logo, and it had passed initial Google review checks. After filing multiple reports, the app was removed, but not before many others lost their funds.

Lesson learned: always download apps from verified links on official websites, not by searching the name alone. Don’t assume an app store listing is automatically safe.
