Overconfidence in a “Safe Market Dip” Cost Me Far More Than I Expected
I want to be very honest here because what happened to me was not a scam by a person, but a situation where I underestimated the true risks of crypto investing. Sometimes the danger comes from the market itself, and not from a scammer. My mistake happened during what many traders casually call a “small dip” or a “normal pullback”.
I had been holding Bitcoin and a few altcoins for months. Everything was going well, and my confidence started to increase more than it should have. Around that time, a lot of people online kept saying things like “buy every dip” and “this is just temporary”. I let that mindset influence me far too much.
When Bitcoin dropped from around forty two thousand to forty thousand, I convinced myself it was the perfect buying opportunity. I bought more and thought I was being smart. When it dropped again to thirty eight thousand, I still believed nothing serious was happening. I kept repeating to myself, “It always recovers”. That phrase became dangerous.
I added even more funds. I was basically averaging down without any real plan. A week later, the market fell harder than I expected. Bitcoin went below thirty five thousand, and several altcoins I held lost more than half their value. My portfolio looked like it had been cut in two. I started panicking, but I kept telling myself I just needed to wait.
Then the real crash happened. One of the altcoins I invested heavily in dropped almost overnight due to a major liquidity issue. Another one lost its exchange listing. My portfolio kept shrinking, and I kept hoping it would bounce back. I did not want to sell at a loss. That stubbornness cost me more than any scam ever did.
Looking back, the mistake was clear. I treated crypto like it was guaranteed to recover. I did not consider risk management, exit strategies, or worst case scenarios. I ignored warning signs because I was influenced by social media charts and comments that repeated the same idea: “Just hold, the market always goes up eventually”.
In the end, I lost a large portion of my capital simply because I had no proper risk plan. The market did not scam me. I scammed myself by believing I could not lose.
If you are new to crypto, please be aware that market risk is real and unforgiving. Never invest more than you can afford to lose, never rely only on optimism, and always prepare for the possibility that things may not recover quickly. Protect your capital first. Profit comes later.
