Crypto scams come in all shapes and sizes, but the one that almost got me was a classic tech support scam with a twist. It started with a phone call that nearly cost me everything.
I had been having some minor issues with my crypto wallet app—just a few bugs that I thought were due to an update. One afternoon, I received a call from a number claiming to be the wallet’s support team. The caller was polite and seemed knowledgeable about my issues. They even mentioned a specific transaction ID, which made me believe that they were genuinely from the company. They said they needed to “verify” my account to resolve the problem and asked me to provide my seed phrase.
At that moment, I almost gave them the information, but something about the situation made me pause. I had read about tech support scams before, where scammers pose as company representatives to gain access to people’s accounts. I told the caller I would handle it myself and ended the conversation. Immediately, I contacted the real support team through their website, and they confirmed that they had not reached out to me. It was a close call, and I realized just how easily I could have lost everything.
After this experience, I started commenting on posts in crypto communities to warn others about these kinds of scams. It’s surprising how many people have similar stories of fake tech support trying to steal their crypto. It’s a reminder that scammers are constantly looking for new ways to exploit vulnerabilities.
If you ever receive an unsolicited call or email asking for sensitive information, hang up and verify directly with the company through their official channels. Never share your seed phrase or private keys with anyone—no legitimate support team will ever ask for them. Let’s keep each other safe by spreading the word. A simple warning can save others from making a life-changing mistake.
