I received a fraudulent invoice through my personal email and upon questioning its legitimacy, I was advised to call a provided phone number. “John,” claiming to be a PayPal security agent working with the FICA and FCC, instructed me to download two security applications, purportedly to track a Russian hacker. These applications were a Bitcoin app and the AnyDesk app. He advised me to transfer money from my business account, of which he knew the last digits, asserting it was necessary to pursue the hacker and promised that the funds and necessary paperwork would be replaced following the hacker’s capture. He reported additional fake PayPal invoices and subsequently accessed our two business accounts, resulting in a total fraud of $12,638 through several transactions and transfers between the accounts. I am now in the process of attempting to recover the fraudulent monies through my bank.
