A Conversation That Changed How I Think About Crypto Investing

Last weekend I met a friend for coffee. We’ve both been following cryptocurrency for a few years, so the conversation naturally turned to investing.

He asked me a simple question.

“How do you decide whether a project is worth investing in?”

I started talking about charts, market trends, and recent news.

    He smiled and said,

“I didn’t ask how you choose. I asked how you avoid choosing the wrong one.”

That made me stop for a moment.

He then told me about an investment he made last year.

“It wasn’t a scam,” he said. “The project was real. The technology was real. But I still lost money.”

    I asked what happened.

    “I confused popularity with quality.”

He explained that everyone around him was talking about the project.

    YouTube videos praised it.

Social media was full of excitement.

Discussion groups were growing every day.

Because so many people believed in it, he assumed the risk was low.

He never asked who owned the largest wallets.

He never checked whether trading volume was increasing naturally or because of short-term hype.

He never thought about what would happen if early investors decided to sell.

A few weeks later, the market changed.

    Nothing illegal happened.

    Nobody disappeared.

    The project continued operating.

The only thing that changed was investor confidence.

The price fell much faster than he expected.

Before we finished our coffee, he said something I’ve remembered ever since.

“The market doesn’t have to be fraudulent for you to lose money. Sometimes poor research is enough.”

That conversation completely changed the way I approach investments.

Now I spend less time asking, “How much could I make?”

And more time asking, “What could I be missing?”

For me, that has become the most valuable question in crypto investing.
