A “Friend” Offered to Help — But Only If I Used His Wallet

This one started in a Facebook crypto group.

Someone posted that they were having trouble buying USDT. Another member replied:

“Don’t use the exchange. Their fees are too high. I can help you directly.”

They had never spoken before.

Still, the profile looked normal. Several years old, plenty of photos, regular posts, and comments from what appeared to be real friends.

The conversation moved to Messenger.

The offer was simple:

Send the money by bank transfer → receive USDT directly → save on exchange fees.

The buyer asked where the crypto would come from.

The answer was:

“My personal wallet. I’ve done this for lots of people in the group.”

Before transferring anything, the buyer searched the person’s name inside the group.

That’s when things became interesting.

Another member had posted about the exact same account several months earlier.

Same offer.

Same explanation about exchange fees.

But after receiving the bank transfer, the account apparently stopped responding.

The buyer went back to check the profile more carefully and noticed something else: most of the older photos had very little recent interaction, while nearly all current activity involved cryptocurrency groups.

Was the account originally genuine and later compromised?

Was someone impersonating the real owner?

I don’t know.

But the buyer didn’t continue with the transaction.

This is a useful reminder that an old social media account isn’t automatically a trustworthy account.

Account age: useful information.
Real-looking photos: useful information.
Mutual groups: useful information.

None of them independently prove who’s controlling the account today.

If someone I’ve never met offers a private crypto transaction, I’d rather verify much more than their Facebook profile before sending money.

Sometimes the profile has a long history.

The person currently typing behind it may not.
