Before You Scan That Crypto QR Code, Stop for a Moment

QR codes make crypto payments easy.

    Scan.
    Check the amount.
    Send.

And that’s exactly why a replaced payment QR code can be dangerous.

Imagine a seller posts a wallet QR code publicly. Someone copies the image, replaces the receiving address with another wallet, and shares the altered version in a fake support chat or copied payment page.

    The page still looks right.

    The logo is there.

    The payment instructions look familiar.

Only the destination address has changed.

    What happens next?

You scan the code → your wallet fills in the address → you confirm the transaction → funds go to the wrong wallet.

Because blockchain transfers are generally difficult to reverse, noticing the change afterwards may be too late.

I think people sometimes trust QR codes more than typed wallet addresses simply because scanning feels safer. But a QR code is still carrying payment information. It deserves the same verification.

Before confirming, I would compare at least part of the receiving address with the address provided through a trusted source.

    Also worth checking:

    • Correct blockchain network
    • Receiving address shown inside the wallet
    • Source of the QR code
    • Any last-minute change to payment instructions

One more thing: if someone says, “The old address isn’t working, use this new QR code immediately,” don’t let urgency do the checking for you.

    Take a minute.

    Verify the destination.

Crypto payments may be fast. Your decision doesn’t have to be rushed.

Check the address, protect yourself, and help others stay alert too.
