Market Experience Notebook: Everyone was talking about profits, nobody was talki

I wrote this note after spending several weeks following a cryptocurrency project that became extremely popular.

At the beginning, the discussions were interesting.

    People talked about the technology.

    They discussed development updates.

They compared the project to competitors.

    Then the price started rising.

    Slowly, the conversations changed.

    Technology became less important.

    Development updates became less important.

Almost every discussion became focused on price.

    How high could it go?

When would it reach the next target?

    Who was buying more?

One evening, I opened three different discussion groups and noticed something strange.

Hundreds of messages were being posted.

Almost none of them mentioned risk.

Nobody was discussing what might happen if market conditions changed.

    Nobody was talking about liquidity.

Nobody was talking about concentration of ownership.

The conversation had become completely one-sided.

A few weeks later, the market cooled.

    Trading activity slowed.

Some large holders reduced their positions.

    The price fell significantly.

    Suddenly the discussions changed again.

The same people who had been predicting endless growth were now looking for explanations.

That experience taught me something important.

Risk does not disappear when people stop talking about it.

In fact, that may be the moment when risk becomes most dangerous.

Since then, I pay close attention to what is missing from conversations.

Sometimes the most valuable information is not what everyone is discussing.

Sometimes it is what nobody is discussing.

That simple observation has helped me evaluate investments more carefully than any price prediction ever could.
