One Letter in the Wallet Address Was Different
Original address: 0x7A4…91B6
Address in the message: 0x7A4…91B8
At a quick glance, they looked identical.
That tiny difference was almost enough to send a crypto payment to the wrong destination.
The person involved had been communicating with someone who claimed to represent an investment service. Earlier payments had gone to one wallet address without any obvious problem.
When it was time for another transfer, a new payment message arrived.
He copied the address and was about to confirm.
Luckily, he compared it with the previous instructions first.
The last character was different.
He asked the account manager why the wallet had changed.
The first answer was:
“It’s our updated payment wallet.”
A minute later, the explanation became:
“Each customer receives a unique address.”
But that didn’t make sense either, because he’d already been using another supposedly unique address.
At that point, he didn’t send anything.
What I like about this example is that there was no dramatic warning message or obvious scam page. The important detail was sitting inside a long string of characters that most people don’t want to read carefully.
Crypto addresses aren’t designed to be memorable.
That’s exactly why I think last-minute address changes deserve extra attention.
When I’m dealing with an unfamiliar receiving address now, I don’t just check the first few characters.
Beginning → Middle → End → Network
And if payment instructions suddenly change, I verify them through a separate trusted channel before doing anything.
It only takes a few extra seconds.
A blockchain transaction can last much longer than the mistake that caused it.
