Social Media Investment Conversations: A Red Flag Checklist
I created this checklist after noticing similar patterns in a number of cryptocurrency-related conversations online.
Not every item below means a scam.
However, the more boxes that get checked, the more cautious I become.
□ The person contacted you first without any previous connection.
□ The conversation started casually but gradually shifted toward investing.
□ Most discussions focus on profits rather than risks.
□ Screenshots are shared frequently, but independent proof is difficult to verify.
□ Questions about strategy receive vague answers.
□ Questions about earnings receive detailed answers.
□ The person claims access to a special opportunity unavailable to most people.
□ There is pressure to act quickly before the opportunity disappears.
□ Communication is encouraged through private messages rather than public discussion.
□ Independent reviews are difficult to locate.
□ The platform being promoted is unfamiliar despite claims of widespread success.
□ Concerns are addressed with reassurance rather than evidence.
□ Every story shared by the promoter is positive.
□ Very little discussion focuses on potential losses.
□ The recommendation becomes stronger after trust has already been established.
After reviewing many conversations, I noticed something interesting.
Most problematic situations do not begin with a request for money.
They begin with a request for attention.
The investment offer usually comes later.
That is why I find the conversation process more important than the opportunity itself.
A checklist like this does not provide certainty.
What it does provide is a reason to slow down and verify information before making decisions.
Sometimes taking a step back is the most valuable action an investor can take.
