Why Was the “Auditor” Contacting Him Through WhatsApp?

This question came up after I read a complaint involving a blocked crypto withdrawal.

The investor had already completed the platform’s normal identity verification. When he later requested a withdrawal, support said the account had been selected for an independent financial audit.

That sounds serious.

A day later, someone contacted him on WhatsApp.

The message began:

“Hello, I am the auditor assigned to your cryptocurrency account.”

No company email.

No case reference he could independently verify.

Just a WhatsApp profile with a person’s photograph and the word Auditor in the description.

The conversation became stranger from there.

The supposed auditor already knew the user’s account balance and withdrawal amount. That initially made him appear legitimate.

Then he said the audit had discovered a “liquidity discrepancy.”

To resolve it, the user needed to transfer approximately $900 in USDT to a wallet address.

The investor asked:

Can you send the audit findings by official email?

The answer was that all documents would be provided after payment.

Can I contact your auditing firm directly?

No clear answer.

Can the $900 be deducted from my account balance?

Apparently that was “not permitted by blockchain regulations.”

At this stage, the user stopped communicating and contacted the platform through the original support channel.

Here’s the part I find useful: knowing information about someone’s account doesn’t automatically prove that a new contact is genuine. If information has been shared internally, exposed, or obtained from earlier conversations, it can make an impersonation attempt much more convincing.

If an outside auditor, investigator, regulator, or compliance officer suddenly contacts me about money, I’d want to verify that person independently, not through the phone number or link they provide.

And I’d be especially cautious if an “audit” ends with instructions to send cryptocurrency to another wallet.

A professional title is easy to type into a WhatsApp profile.

Verifying the person behind it is the important part.
